It’s been a hard few weeks.
I don’t talk much about my personal life here on the blog; an intentional decision I made after being blindsided with a painful and unwanted divorce years back. But I’m also a very transparent person. For those of you who know me, I image your heads all nodding along because you know that I can’t hide anything. And so, as I walk a thin line between my natural tendency for transparency and a learned desire to keep my personal and professional life separate, I will go as go as far to say that it’s been a difficult and painful season filled with heartache for an already weary soul.
If life has taught me anything (which it has; it’s taught me many things), I learned that pain is a part of it. Fighting it or running from it won’t save me from heartache. Pain is inevitably there and my energy should be focused on finding ways to live alongside it rather than escaping it. I have been learning and relearning this in the last 2 years and over time have found several ways to live with the pain.
Among these practices are:
- Yoga and mediation
- Solo hikes in the Columbia River Gorge
- Creative work
- Surrounding myself with people
- Healthy comfort food*
*I say healthy comfort food because staying healthy is incredibly life giving and energizing, allowing me to show up to life time and again.
For that reason, I’ve been eating a lot of this easy guacamole. So much that I’m going from feeling blue to a little green.
I’m certainly not implying that guacamole takes away the pain. It doesn’t. But these small comforts in life allow me to lean into my senses and find delight every day. The feeling of warm spring sun on my skin. The sound of hauntingly sad music in my ears. The feeling of my daughters ringlets through my fingers. The taste of refreshing and buttery avocado on my tongue.
Returning to my senses helps me find comfort amidst a broken heart.
I know that I am not the only one carrying pain right now. I know that many of you are in the midst of your own darkness. For that, I am sad with you. To you, my friends, may you find solidarity with others, small joys that help ease the burden, and tiny comforts that ignite your senses and make you grateful to be alive.

- 2 ripe avocados
- 2-3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/4 cup red onion, diced
- 1/2 jalapeno, diced
- 1/3 cup cilantro, chopped
- juice of 1 lime
- 3/4 teaspoon cumin
- salt, to taste
- Combine all the ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Adjust seasoning to taste.
- Serve immediately with chips or tortillas.
