January is the perfect time for a detox and so all month I’ll be creating delicious plant-based, gluten-free, no refined sugar recipes to help you on your way towards a healthy 2021.

And this smoothie is one of the best ways to start your day! It is full of amazing detox foods such as ginger, turmeric, hemp hearts, and lemon. Let's take a look at what these foods can do.

Ginger – Ginger is filled with antioxidants, stimulates digestion and circulation, cleanses the body of toxins and free radicals, has mega anti-inflammatory properties, lowers blood sugar, and cholesterol.

Lemon – Lemon is filled with Vitamin C for a powerful immunity booster, improves digestive health, aids in digestion, and helps to control weight.

Turmeric – Turmeric is one of best-known anti-inflammatories which helps kill free radicals and improve overall health, it’s filled with antioxidants, good for the heart, skin, and brain, and is believed to even help battle depression.

Hemp Hearts - Hemp Hearts are high in fiber, which is essential for cleaning out your digestive system and full of Omega-6 and Omega-3, not only are necessary and hard to get as a vegan, but have strong anti inflammatory benefits.

With these four detoxifiers, you’ve got yourself one powerful smoothie.

Mango Ginger Detox Smoothie

Ingredients & Substitutions

While the recipe below is my favorite detox smoothie recipe, there are, in truth, endless variations. You can experiment with a different smoothie every day of the week for a fully satisfying breakfast.

This smoothie allows for a lot of variation. For more protein, add your favorite protein powder, chia seeds, or extra hemp hearts. You can also consider adding Maca Powder and Ashwagandha Powder for mood and energy-boosting properties. (<<affiliate links).

Here is everything you need.

Ingredient Notes

  • Fruit – I use a combination of banana and mango. Make sure that your fruit is completely frozen so that your smoothie has the right consistency.
  • Non-Dairy Milk– Feel free to use your favorite non-dairy milk of choice. You can also use coconut water if you prefer.
  • Superfood Add-ins (optional) – You can add a variety of superfoods for a healthy boost. A few of my favorites are hemp hearts, maca powder, ashwagandha powder, and cayenne pepper. These all have incredible benefits for your mood, energy, heart, and overall health.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Smoothie are super simple to make! The key to a good smoothie is keeping the consistency thick, creamy, and cold.

Step One – Peel and Grate the Ginger

Using a sharp knife, cut off the skin of the ginger. With a microplane, grate about 1-2 teaspoons of fresh ginger and set aside.

Pro Tip: I do not recommend substituting ground ginger for fresh. The taste of fresh ginger is so much better.

Step Two - Blend the Ingredients

Blend the ingredients together in a blender until you have a thick, creamy consistency. If it is too thick, feel free to add more non-dairy milk. Taste and adjust the spices and maple syrup.

Pro Tip: Make sure that you are using frozen fruit at the base of your vegan smoothies. Frozen fruit provides thick, ice cream-like consistency. When smoothies aren’t properly chilled, the texture can get thick and slimy.

Serving And Storing

Serving – Serve your smoothies immediately!

Storing – Do you have any leftover smoothie? Freeze it in popsicle molds for a healthy midday snack.

Tips And Tricks

  1. Make sure your fruit is completely frozen to ensure the right ice cream-like consistency. To freeze the bananas, peel and chop ripe bananas into 1″ pieces. Freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet. When frozen all the way through transfer the banana pieces to a ziplock bag. Return to the freezer and store for up to three months. When ready to use, just toss them in your blender with the rest of your smoothie ingredients.
  2. Blend your ingredients until they are completely smooth. If your smoothie is too thick, add additional non-dairy milk, 2 tablespoons at a time, until you have a pourable consistency.
  3. Enjoy your smoothie immediately! As smoothies sit out at room temperature, they become thick and slimy.

Frequently Asked Questions

For sure! Just reduce the liquid by ½ cup and you will have a thicker consistency to be enjoyed through a spoon. Top with hemp hearts, fresh mango, and banana.

Can I add spinach to my smoothie?

What do I do with leftover smoothie?

This smoothie should be eaten enjoyed immediately. If you do have leftover smoothie, freeze it in popsicle molds for a healthy midday snack!
