I can't think of a better way to start a day. These waffles are sweet and delicious and always put a smile on my face in the morning. They are easy to make, ready in just 15 minutes, and you only need eight ingredients!

Another great thing about this recipe is that it doesn't call for vegan buttermilk as other recipes do. Adding leavening agents such as baking soda and baking powder delivers the same fluffy results, making this vegan waffles recipe nearly fail-proof!

I like to top my waffles with fresh fruit and maple syrup but feel free to get creative with your toppings. You can opt for vegan whipped cream, vegan chocolate sauce, vegan nut butter, or fruit compote. Anything goes!

Recommended Ingredients & Equipment

The great thing about these vegan waffles is that you only need 8 ingredients to make them! In fact, you probably have these ingredients in your kitchen already. So what are you waiting for?

Here is everything you need.

Classic vegan waffle ingredients: all-purpose flour, non-dairy milk, coconut oil, salt, baking soda, baking powder, sugar and vanilla extract

Ingredient Notes

  • All-Purpose Flour - For a gluten-free alternative, try a gluten-free 1:1 flour blend.
  • Leavening Agents - Baking soda and baking powder are leavening agents that are used to help batters and doughs to rise. Adding them to the waffle batter helps to make the waffles extra soft and fluffy on the inside. Make sure your leavening agents aren't expired or they won't have the same results.
  • Oil - I recommend coconut oil but any neutral-flavored oil will work.
  • Non-Dairy Milk - Use any non-dairy milk of your choice for this recipe. I recommend either soy or almond milk for this recipe. Look for a plain unsweetened variety.
  • Sugar - Check out my guide to vegan sugars and alternative sugar replacements. For a healthier sugar alternative, I recommend coconut sugar.
  • Toppings - I topped my waffles with fresh berries and maple syrup. You can also use vegan whipped cream, vegan chocolate sauce, vegan nut butter, or fruit compote.

Recommended Equipment

Let's get cooking! For the vegan waffles recipe, you will need a medium-sized bowl, basic kitchen utensils, and a waffle maker. Make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions when cooking the waffles as instructions may vary.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step One - Prepare Waffle Batter

Add dry ingredients for waffles to a bowl then add wet ingredients.

Start by preheating the waffle maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Grab a medium-sized bowl. Add flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder and a pinch of salt. Then, in a separate bowl, whisk together oil, non-dairy milk, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well, until most of the lumps are gone.

Pro Tip: Do not over mix the batter as this will cause the waffles to become tough and rubbery. Make sure that there are still some lumps in the batter.

Step Two - Add Waffle to Waffle Maker

Spray waffle iron with cooking oil to prevent the waffles from sticking to the waffle maker. Then, pour the recommended amount (amounts will vary depending on your waffle iron) of batter onto the hot waffle iron, and cook until the waffle is golden brown on both sides. Your waffle maker should have a light to indicate when the waffles are ready.

Serve immediately with desired toppings, such as fresh fruits and maple syrup.

Pro Tip: Do not add the waffle batter to a cool or cold waffle maker. Make sure the waffle maker has heated up for at least five minutes before adding the batter.

Serving and Storing

Serving - Serve these waffles fresh and warm with fresh fruit! I added kiwi, blueberries, and maple syrup. You can also add vegan whipped cream, nut butter, or vegan chocolate sauce.

Storing - Store leftover waffles in an airtight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. You can also freeze them in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Gently reheat them in the oven or microwave to enjoy.

Tips and Tricks

  1. Mix the dry ingredients together first. This ensures that all of the dry ingredients are well combined before cooking. When the dry ingredients are not mixed well it can result in an uneven rise and sometimes it can affect the flavor of the waffles.
  2. Take care that the waffle batter is not over-mixed. When combining the ingredients mix until the batter is evenly hydrated; a few lumps are always okay. The less you mix, the more tender and delicate the texture of the waffles will be.
  3. Read the manufacturer's instructions on the waffle maker. Every waffle maker is slightly different so to get the best results make sure you follow the instructions on your waffle maker.
  4. Allow the waffle maker to heat up before adding the waffle batter. It is important to allow the waffle maker to heat up before you add the batter. If the waffle batter is added to a cold waffle maker then they will become soggy and you don't want soggy waffles!
  5. Eat waffles immediately. After 10-15 minutes, they start to lose their lightly fried crispy outsides and get soggy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do my vegan waffles stick?

There are many reasons why your waffles may stick to the waffle iron. Not having your waffle iron properly preheated or skipping the non-stick spray may be the reason why your waffles are sticking. Spray generously and add batter only to a preheated iron.

Can I make this recipe oil-free?

Yes, if you want an oil-free vegan waffles recipe, you can substitute apple sauce for the coconut oil. However, I do recommend that you spray the waffle maker between each waffle to prevent it from sticking to the pan.

Can vegans eat waffles?

Yes, vegans can eat waffles. There are lots of waffle recipes that are vegan-friendly. Leavening ingredients such as baking powder and baking soda make vegan waffles just as fluffy as non-vegan waffles.

Why are my waffles soggy?

If the iron is not hot then the waffles will be soggy and squishy. To avoid this make sure that the waffle iron heats up for at least 5 minutes before adding the batter to the pan.

How long do I cook waffles in a waffle maker?

It totally depends on the model of the waffle maker. Some waffle makers take 5 minutes while other take 10. If the waffle maker has an indicator light then look out for the light to change color.
