Heat up the summer with these BBQ Chik Burgers. Made with vegan “chicken” patties, caramelized onions, and a sweet and savory BBQ sauce, these burgers will be the highlight of your summer BBQs.
It is almost officially summertime and you know what that means…
Summer potlucks and BBQs for the next 3 months! With my newly built fire pit and patio, a brand new fence, and a recently mowed lawn, I cannot wait to get outside with my friends and family and share some summertime meals.
That’s what summer is all about, after all.
Anyone who’s been eating vegan for more than a couple days knows that it can be hard, however, to share meals with omnivore friends. When it comes to holidays, I’m still trying to figure out the best way to do this. But as far as the summer goes, I’ve got a solution: MorningStar Farms®, a company committed to bringing you plant-based comfort foods that are both convenient and delicious. Be sure to click here to learn more about MorningStar Farms and check for savings and grilling season tips throughout the summer!
I’ve been enjoying MorningStar Farms plant-based products for years, and I recently discovered that they changed their recipe for the Original Chik Pattie by making it 100% vegan as well! I don’t know about you but as soon as I heard that, I stocked up my freezer for the summer.
Wanna do the same? You can find MorningStar Farms products in the frozen aisle at most well-stocked grocery stores. Or find their products through their store locator here.
MorningStar Farms products are not just for vegans and vegetarians. Their food is so good that I know many omnivores who prefer them over conventional items. It’s true—my omnivore boyfriend always chooses MorningStar Farms’ Chik’n Nuggets. And for these vegan BBQ burgers, I couldn’t think of a better protein than the Original Chik Pattie.
You’re going to love it.
Ingredients for Vegan BBQ Chik Sandwiches
You don’t need a lot of ingredients to make these decadent and gourmet sandwiches this summer. Besides picking up a pack of MorningStar Farms Chik patties, you will need:
- Hamburger Buns
- Barbecue sauce (can be homemade or store-bought)
- Arugula (or greens of choice)
- Vegan cheese (completely optional)
- and caramelized onions
And, the best news, this recipe requires very little prep work. That means more time spent outside.
How to make BBQ Vegan Chik Sandwiches
Now that we have our protein of choice, let’s talk about the only other component that needs to be prepped for this sandwich: the caramelized onions.
How to make caramelized onions
Caramelized onions take a little bit of time, but they are so worth it. The caramelization process slowly pulls out the natural flavors of the onion, making them intensely sweet and flavorful.
To make caramelized onions, first coat the bottom of a heavy bottomed sauté pan with olive oil. Heat it over medium-low heat and add the sliced onions. Cook the onions slowly, stirring them every few minutes. After 10 minutes, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and continue to cook for another 10-20 minutes until onions have reduced in size and are caramel in color. (see picture below).
Cook the protein
While the onions are caramelizing, you can cook the Original Chik Patties. Cook them in the oven with a slice of vegan cheese for just about 18 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt over the patty as it cooks.
Assemble the sandwiches
Once the onions are ready and the patties are cooked, you can assemble your sandwiches! Place a handful of fresh arugula on the bottom of each bun. Top with a tomato slice and a cooked Chik Pattie. Pile on the caramelized onions and cover it all in barbecue sauce.
Now you are ready to enjoy!
These sandwiches are the perfect addition to your weekend BBQs and summer potlucks. They are decadent, gourmet, and SUPER simple to make. Just grab a few Original Chik Patties from MorningStar Farms and you’re halfway there!
