It’s true—my omnivore boyfriend always chooses MorningStar Farms’ Chik’n Nuggets. And for these vegan BBQ burgers, I couldn’t think of a better protein than the Original Chik Pattie.

Ingredients for Vegan BBQ Chik Sandwiches
You don’t need a lot of ingredients to make these decadent and gourmet sandwiches this summer. Besides picking up a pack of MorningStar Farms Chik patties, you will need:
- Hamburger Buns
- Barbecue sauce (can be homemade or store-bought)
- Arugula (or greens of choice)
- Vegan cheese (completely optional)
- and caramelized onions
And, the best news, this recipe requires very little prep work. That means more time spent outside.
How to make BBQ Vegan Chik Sandwiches
Now that we have our protein of choice, let’s talk about the only other component that needs to be prepped for this sandwich: the caramelized onions.
How to make caramelized onions
Caramelized onions take a little bit of time, but they are so worth it. The caramelization process slowly pulls out the natural flavors of the onion, making them intensely sweet and flavorful.
To make caramelized onions, first coat the bottom of a heavy bottomed sauté pan with olive oil. Heat it over medium-low heat and add the sliced onions. Cook the onions slowly, stirring them every few minutes. After 10 minutes, sprinkle with a pinch of salt and continue to cook for another 10-20 minutes until onions have reduced in size and are caramel in color. (see picture below).
Cook the protein
While the onions are caramelizing, you can cook the Original Chik Patties. Cook them in the oven with a slice of vegan cheese for just about 18 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt over the patty as it cooks.
Assemble the sandwiches
Once the onions are ready and the patties are cooked, you can assemble your sandwiches! Place a handful of fresh arugula on the bottom of each bun. Top with a tomato slice and a cooked Chik Pattie. Pile on the caramelized onions and cover it all in barbecue sauce.
Now you are ready to enjoy!

- 4 Morningstar Original Chik Patties
- 4 hamburger buns
- 2 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp. olive oil
- pinch of salt
- 4 slices vegan mozzarella-style cheese, optional
- large handful fresh arugula
- 1 large tomato, cut into thick slices
- 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
Preheat the oven (or a grill) to 375 F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place 4 MorningStar Chik Patties in a single layer. Top each patty with a slice of vegan cheese (optional), and bake for 15-18 minutes until the patties are crispy and the cheese has melted.
Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add sliced onions and sauté on low for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a pinch of salt and continue to cook for an additional 10-20 minutes until onions are caramel colored and fragrant.
To assemble the sandwiches, place arugula on the bottom of each bun. Top with a slice of tomato, chik pattie, caramelized onions, and BBQ sauce. Serve immediately with your favorite BBQ side dishes
